TRAINING OUTLINE FOR INTAKE DIRECT SUPPORT SPECIALIST

(Caregiver)

TRAINING OUTLINE

 

During the term of apprenticeship, the apprentice shall receive such instruction and experience, in all branches of the occupation, as are necessary to develop a practical and versatile worker.  Major processes in which apprentices will be trained (although not necessarily in the order listed) and approximate hours (not necessarily continuous) to be spent in each are as follows:

Related instruction outcomes as well as on-the-job learning outcomes must be based on validated-occupational analyses and skill/educational standards such as the Community Support Skill Standards, the Maricopa Veterans Care Center Frontline Supervisor Competencies or other validated standards relevant to the direct support role developed and validated using recognized occupational analysis methods.  The following related training outline identifies subject matter that must be mastered by the Apprentice (although not necessarily in the order listed) in order to successfully complete the program.  

Outline    

Course 1:  

Introduction to Veterans Communities, Developmental Disabilities, Psycho-social Rehabilitation, Post Traumatic Stress Disorders).    


1. Historical perspectives on human services for veterans;
2. Introduction to human and community needs;
3. Concepts of a helping profession;
4. Contemporary principles of service delivery;
5. Basic terminology and acronyms of human services for veterans;
6. Defining the at-risk veteran’s population; and
7. Common causes and issues associated with post traumatic stress disorders.

 

Course 2:  

Supporting people’s well-being at home, work and in recreational activities (may be customized for specific population) Risk, choice and common sense;


1. Safety at home (fire safety, accessibility, home hazards);
2. First aid;
3. Universal precautions and infection control;
4. Responding to emergencies;
5. Crisis prevention, intervention and follow-up;
6. Safety in community settings; and 
7. Recognizing, preventing and reporting abuse, neglect and exploitation.

Course 3:  

Supporting healthy lifestyles    


1. Supporting healthy lives: nutrition, exercise, and recreation;
2. Preventive health and dental care;
3. Signs and symptoms of illnesses;
4. Medical abbreviations and terms;
5. Medication support, administration and self-administration;
6. Recognizing side effects of medication;
7. Finding and communicating with quality health care providers;

Course 4:  

Planning and Facilitating Support     
The role of the IDSP in assessing, planning and delivering support;


1. Learning what people need and want;
2. Concepts of strengths based/ person-centered planning;
3. Community and service networking;
4. Documentation;
5. Teamwork and Communication;
6. Confidentiality;
7. Partnering with service participant, families (where appropriate) and others important to the service recipient;

Course 5:  

Empowerment, and Citizenship Human, legal and civil rights and their protections;
1. Privacy, and confidentiality;
2. Empowerment and control in helping relationships;
3. Participant choice, control and decision making;
4. Advocacy and supporting self-advocacy;
5. Common barriers people with (special population) face;

Course 6:  

Ethical and Professional Practice    
1.Ethics of support relationships;
2.Translating ethics into practice;
3.Becoming a culturally competent IDSP;
4.Communication and teamwork;
5.Self assessment, self-direction and supervision in professional development;
6.Co-worker relationships; and
7.Sharing information and knowledge.

Course 7:

Companionship Visits During and After Hospital Stays

In Home Caregiving Visit with clients during hospital stays Family Health Status Updates
Assist clients in transitioning home; Attend life appointments with clients after transitioning home

 

Course 8:

Managing Personal Private Care Matters                                                                      
Notifying Families and Providing Family Updates, Employment Updates; Insurance Notifications, DMV Notifications, Assistance in filing for Disability, Relocation Assistance (when one has to relocate as a result of illness), Pet Care (Referral Service), Home Housekeeping,Lawn Service (Referral Service)


Course 9:

Job Readiness and Employment                                                                                

1.Assessing vocational interests
2.Examining job content and opportunities
3.Identifying candidate job skills
4.Teaching basic work readiness skills
5.Developing supports on the job
